'Night of The Big Flood'

'Oíche na Tuile Móire'

Like other areas of Inishowen, Clonmany was severely impacted by the devasting flood on the 22nd of August 2017. The following video produced by Inishowen Rivers Trust gives a clear and insightful account of the ‘Night of the Big Flood’ in Clonmany Parish. It gives harrowing accounts of the events that unfolded that night, the suddenness of it all, stories of previous exceptional floods in the parish and the heartwarming community response that emanated from it. It also details the subsequent great work done by both the Inishowen Rivers Trust and the local farmers in installing Leaky Dams on the local rivers and tributaries in Clonmany Parish.

The material previously displayed on this page consisted of an embedded YouTube video link, limited quotations and still images from the Inishowen Rivers Trust, 'Night of the Big Flood – Inishowen – 22nd Aug 2017' video, which documented the exceptional flooding that affected Clonmany and surrounding areas in 2017. The purpose of referencing that video is solely to provide historical context and factual information concerning flood risk, public health & safety and environmental concerns affecting the local community. The video is publicly available and was embedded from YouTube; no content was reproduced beyond what was necessary to explain the scale and impact of the flooding. Any extracts were used in a proportionate, non-commercial, public-interest context in good faith and with regard to Irish copyright law (Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000), and all rights remain with the original copyright holder.

Following a telephone call (28th Febuary 2026) from the Inishowen Rivers Trust concerning a complaint that they received about the previous content of this page — which included limited quotations and limited still images from the 'Night of the Big Flood' video — 'ClonmanyResidents' have decided to remove by redaction the embedded YouTube video, all quotations and all video stills. Removal by redaction retains the integrity of the original content. Links to the YouTube video have been maintained with added deep linking to the previously referenced sections and quotes. Although the material was used in a proportionate, non-commercial, public-interest context and no copyright breach was believed to have arisen, these redactions have been made to avoid any dispute and to maintain a constructive and cordial relationship with all.

'ClonmanyResidents' holds the Inishowen Rivers Trust in high regard, as an organisation that provides fundamental and essential valuable services to both the Clonmany and the Inishowen area. The original analysis and publication of information were undertaken solely in the interest of public safety — particularly in light of the impact of the 2017 flooding on elderly residents and Riverside Park residents in Clonmany Village — and to highlight flooding and environmental concerns relating to a floodplain removal and a riverside embankment development. 'ClonmanyResidents' apologises to the complainant for any undue stress or concern caused by the publication of previous content.

'ClonmanyResidents' would also like to publicily thank local farmers and landowners for participating in the ‘Leaky Dams’ initiative of the Inishowen Rivers Trust.

Binion Flooding

This particular field here is 13 acres, every inch of this field here was under water, and the water continued up towards to Clonmany village, so god knows how many acres of land was under water, on both sides of the road, and the water didn't subside, that was on the Tuesday night it got covered and it didn't subside until the Thursday night.

I would say that it was probably maybe between 2 1/2 to 3 feet in depth. You wouldn't take a chance of walking in because of the force of the water flowing.

Image Redacted

There were dead animals lying all over this field. They weren't mine, they were sheep that had come down the river ... the river had come up ... probably a good six, eight foot for the river to come out into this field, so that shows you the depth and the force, that it actually washed animals out into the middle of the field. So that was the force.

When I was a kid in the late 50's, I have a photograph of in the house of my grandfather and my father down in our farmyard, down below, you where there today, holding a big metal gate and the big boulders and stones were on the farmyard, complete ground, old house was full ... my granny and grandad were up a big chestnut tree beside the pig houses, the pigs were drowned in the pig houses”

I have photos of my grandma and grandfather in the Derry journal, 1950 something in that flood”

This one (2017 flood) would have rated as bad ... 50's was in the summer time too ... like it was a cloud burst up there ... Buncrana and Carndonagh was, a heatwave in it ... it was a cloudburst up here in the mountains that caused that ... it was localised.. the night of the (2017) flood here, Moville was grand, no flooding there ... Buncrana and here got some washing ...

Glenevin Devastation & Noise

Clonmany was closed off ... two metres of water between the bridge and Clonmany (village) ...”

... you could hear the boulders going down past there (Glenevin) ... you knew that there was utter devastation happening up here (Glenevin) ..”

it's a miracle that nobody drowned..

Clonmany Village Flooding

What's going on? The Cross (Clonmany Village) is flooded. The Community Centre is flooded. Half the bridge has been washed away in the Cross (Clonmany Village) ... there were tractors and trailer ferrying people over the bridge

The force of the water was pushing him backwards .. When he went outside ... The water was gushing from this end, which is the river. It was flowing ferociously down that way but then it was also coming down from the road

Bernie Kearney's House Landslide

Image Redacted

... an unmerciful bang ... and the next thing I looked and my back kitchen wall was coming in towards me ... completely blackout .. went to the front door to get out ... keys were in the rubble ... made my way to my bedroom, front bedroom ... jumped out the window there .. had visions of the house tumbling down on top of me ...

... standing out in the front lawn, I'd say for about maybe a good 4 or 5 minutes before I could get in contact with anybody ... when they came they had to lift me out over the hedge because my drive was completely covered in mud ... and there was a lot of rocks

I thought I imagined that the wall had come in until the next day ... didn't realize that things were so bad ..

I'd say only for the beam around the house that the roof would have come in .. so that probably saved my life that night

The mud was right up to the spoutings at the back ... This is the bedroom where the rock came in, and it pushed my bed right over to the dressing table here ..

Image Redacted

The rock that came down from the mountain it pushed my car in through the wall into my kitchen. So my car was half in the kitchen, half out

This rock here came into my kitchen; it's a very big rock. This is the one here that came into my bedroom . They were too big to be taken away ...

Unearthly Noise in Clonmany Village

Image Redacted

The big bridge in Clonmany was pretty much, just wiped away, the whole far side of it .. speaking to friends of mine who lived in Riverside Park and they were telling me about the noise, everybody would talk about, it was the noise of it...a friend of mine that lives right on it .. he was terrified by the noise, he never heard anything like it, unearthly ...

Riverside Park Flooding

For us it was very, very quick, everything happened very fast ... Ballyhallan River ... water seems to have broken the banks further up ... came through neighbours gardens ... the water had come and come quite quick

... our house ended up like a little island itself, in this gushing river ... hip level in our garden ... it destroyed our house ... such a panic that night, I know that it came in so fast, that you had no time to save anything

Cloontagh River Flooding, Noise & Boulders

Clonmany Community Centre Devastation & Destruction

So, arrived down the next morning, and oh my god, the mess, never forget it because the sewer is here, and the water had mixed ... there was just a black scum over. The water had gone .. because it just comes in and disappears and it's so fast

When we came in the next day, loads of people locally came in, brushes and stuff. It destroyed the centre, completely destroyed it and we had to rip up the floor.

We had to get rid of so much stuff, all our computers, 20 odd computers

... a lot of factors that converged to make that night of the 22nd of August particularly destructive ... a tropical storm that has arisen in Eastern United States .. about a week previously and it was named Gert ... extremely heavy rainfall ... very little wind ... 77mm of rain fell just in 8 hours
